Fairytales Retold

As a young adult, I worked as a nanny in North Dallas. Every morning one summer, I would drive to work and noticed over the wall of an enclosed house peaked six-foot-high sunflowers bobbing their yellow heads in greeting. I looked forward to seeing them every morning until one day when they weren’t there anymore. My writer’s imagination went into overdrive. Where had they gone? Had someone chopped them down? Having just finished a lengthy writing project, my mind was ripe for something new. Rapunzel began telling me her story of how sunflowers had led Paul to her tower. She told me of how the witch decapitated the sunflowers, threw Paul from the tower, and left her bewildered in a wilderness. I thought I was just writing a short story of fairytales retold, but each chapter led to the next and Rapunzel kept telling me more.

More Than One Story

I had no idea that this first book would begin a series that would take us into new worlds filled with questions. Can a young woman raised in isolation learn to navigate the world? Can she learn to trust and forgive?

What has surprised me most, though perhaps it shouldn’t, is how Rapunzel’s questions often echo my own and those of my readers. We understand Rapunzel’s misadventures because we have been in difficult situations. I know many of us would say we feel like misfits who have a difficult time navigating this strange world.

What’s Ahead in Fairytales Retold

Before the Tower, a novella telling of how a young girl became the witch and who Cat really is now available.
