Journey and Discover Stories

Journey - authorjroe.com

When you were little, did you ever pick up a storybook and lose all sense of time? Perhaps you are like me and your mother had to call you more than once to get you to put the book down. Those stories shaped us and changed how we view life. They are still shaping us, developing in us a desire to become part of the adventure, to take a great journey. Could we each be on such a journey, part of a larger story? I believe we are. What’s more, I believe we are on this journey together.

Take a moment to look through my posts or read an excerpt from one of my books. Whether I am writing fairytale fantasy or stories from my own life, I invite you to join me. I think together we can discover amazing things and inspire one another to live lives brimming with joy.

Stories make the journey better.

Umm . . . What Is Even Happening? My three musketeers and I trade videos back and forth to keep updated on each other’s lives since we live so far apart. In doing so, these impromptu videos are full of all sorts of unscripted ridiculous moments. One bestie is constantly saying “What is even happening?” […]

“FREE books for book lovers who adore fairytales”–sound too good to be true? I know, you’re skeptical. But as an author who loves connecting with readers who love fairytales, I’m so excited to make this a reality. Read on if this has intrigued you and let’s get you those free books!

Readers judge others, and themselves, by how fast they read. But should they? What if we could get back to just enjoying reading?

Among us silly bookworms, 5 of the GREATEST Heroes {and why we love them} will not be something we can all agree on. It is intensely personal as to what draws someone to a hero. Go ahead and ask the nearest bibliophile, “What makes a hero great?” Depending on who you ask you might get a varied list:

  • a chiseled jawline
  • dry wit
  • unshakeable faith
  • strength of character
  • washboard abs
  • fierce loyalty
  • mysterious past
  • brooding eyes
  • playful smile

. . . I could go on. In fact, I will. But my personal list will be less about physicality and more about what motivates him. There is no way to discuss what makes them great without a few spoilers, but please have grace with me.

Though I used to not celebrate Halloween, I have found an odd acceptance with the holiday. I have discovered great joy in passing out candy, watching movies with my kids, and allowing myself the treat of a book that gives me chills. Not a fan of Stepen King, I prefer instead gothic horror and the sublime. So, if you are like me and looking for, oh, let’s say 8 frightening books to read this Halloween? Read on and I’ll also point you where to find them.

At my house, we love books. When I say we love books, I mean we are reading constantly. Taking my kids to the library or the bookstore is a timed event. If it isn’t, we lose track of time completely and wonder hours later why we are grumpy and hungry. Might be because we missed […]

Have you ever wondered what you can do to get the word out about a book you LOVE? Or maybe you’re an author that wants to refer your readers to 6 easy {and FUN} ways to share the book love. Read on!

As I thought about my own mom approaching Mother’s Day, I wondered what I could do to celebrate her and women like her. This year I wanted to share how she not only gave me a love of reading, but also the kinds of books that can connect us with our mothers. So join me to discover books about Mothers we love.

If you are like me, you are HIGHLY impacted by your mood. In fact, your Goodreads might have several books “open”at a time on your “currently reading shelf”. Each day you might even be making progress in a different book. It will seem completely random, but I have discovered that it is anything BUT random. And while we head out of the pandemic, we are probably not the same readers we once were.

Recently, a reader emailed me about a special project. Her family is reading aloud all the books that have been published so far in Rapunzel’s journey. For school, they are also researching the different fairy tales that Rapunzel and her friends get mixed up with. She asked if I could provide her with a cheat sheet of the fairy tales I use in each book.

I do take books seriously. Like, probably too seriously. These books that I love reading often have a dark edge, like a razor’s blade. That’s not always a bad thing! Stories are the expression of what we believe and feel, they can cut to the truth of the matter and I need that in my life. But what if the cutting isn’t clean, what if they mar or mutilate under the guise of telling an engaging story?

In a day and age when feisty women full of courage ready to fight to the death fill bookshelves and Bookstagram’s feed, one might wonder where our favorite quiet heroines have gone. Have they disappeared completely, never to be heard from again? Are they still on this journey with us making their way quietly, but learning powerful lessons of strength and endurance?

Are you ready to make 2021 your best reading year so far? I hope so! 2020 has been full of crazy things none of us planned for and I think you will agree that it’s time to say goodbye. I want to plan for better things, and that means making plans for a year of wonderful reading.

Have you noticed a love in literature for a feisty redhead? From Molly Weasley to Anne of Green Gables, here’s why we love them so much!

My favorite stories are those with a flawed hero. As a genuinely flawed individual I find them relatable. This means I inadvertently fall in love with protagonists that have some serious issues. What about you?

When grief and the global pandemic got too heavy, we took our favorite portal fantasies and created a Book Week. Our family had a week full of fun things like the mad hatter’s tea party, hiking, and lots more.

As the weather turns cooler and my kids begin asking for creepy pastimes like roaming through graveyards, I find my mind thinking of the most frightening villains we love to hate. You know the ones, the antagonists whose twisted minds create havoc for our favorite heroes. The ones who, in a great story, often frighten us and we wonder how they will ever be defeated.

There should be no surprise that when an author is fully immersed in the world they’ve created, they begin to explore how it all began. And we, as readers, love the backstory. That’s why prequels and origin stories are our FAVORITES!

A fun pastime of book worms and book nerds is to discuss characters, but what about favorite bookish characters? Which are your favorite? You know, the characters in a book that LOVE to read. Those who answer the call to adventure right away because at last a real-life story is happening to them! . . . Or maybe the ones who have to be persuaded, because life between the pages of a book is a bit safer. Let’s chat about some favorites!

During a crisis, our vision can narrow to what is wrong. But through practicing gratitude and gardening during lockdown, my new focus has helped me fight depression and chronic illness.

There is a strange phenomenon that takes place among a group of bookworms given enough time–the beginning of an unofficial book club. Right now, you might be in denial that you’re even a part of one, but I believe the mere fact that you chose to read a blog with a category titled “For Bookworms” means you are attracted to all kinds of bookishness–including other bibliophiles.

I’ve lived home-bound off-and-on since high school due to complications involving debilitating chronic migraines and resulting depression and anxiety. I have found ways that help me continue to live a worthwhile life even when I can’t function as I would normally like to. Who knew there would be chronic illness tips to help us when we’re shut in?

Can chronic illness actually lead to the best book life? I would venture to say that it can and, in my life, has. Let me share how books can be great self-care.

Love stories and fairy tale retellings crowd the bookstore shelves in the young adult fantasy book section. But why do we want fairy tales retold? What continues to draw us to them time and time again?

Many of us bookworms find ourselves both loving and hating book series that are incomplete. We live in a world of rapid release where delayed gratification lies untapped while drones bring us our next favorite book. But, what if we find ourselves falling in love with a book series that hasn’t been completed yet? Should we even risk it?

Writing the Journey of Rapunzel has been complicated by my personal journey through grief and debilitating illness. What I have discovered is that I have learned how to write and deal with unmet goals, just like my characters. As Rapunzel grows and the ya fantasy fairytale retelling develops, this author has discovered we must celebrate even a hard year’s difficult lessons. What kinds of hard things can you celebrate?

Spring and summer seem to be about fast-paced activities for my family and I found myself reaching for books with similar adventures in mind. I wanted page-turners, wild tales, loud characters. Racing through the first five Percy Jackson books was perfect and I loved every minute. But as we have been heading into fall and winter, something else is calling my name. Fall, trees, and books–can there be anything better?

Instead of escaping reality for a short time in a book, you might be dragging the fantasy into real-life just a little too much. And maybe you’re relying on it to fill up your friendship tank. No judgment here. I’m an author and I have book-crazy children. Here are some of our struggles sprinkled with a few suggestions that we should all be able to laugh about together.

Parting In our minds, a timer is ticking. It’s ticking off moments, letting us know how long we have to sort through things. We find ourselves rushing through tasks, meals, conversations to get to the next thing. We have planners and calendars stacked with appointments, meetings, chores. And always the clock is counting down. But […]

Book nerd humor helps when authors kill off your fave characters, don’t write fast enough, and no one in your family understands. We in book fandoms have 3 bookish problems, so let’s discover silly tricks for bookworms. #reading #writingcommunity

How can anyone do it all? There’s a fundamental flaw in this question. Can you see it? No one can or should try to do it all. And the more we try to control things, especially when we have chronic or grief issues, things are going to go wrong.

How do you find books worth reading? I have some suggestions for the best ya books to read that will start your family talking again. #momlife #read

I’m not mechanical, not in the least. I leave that to amazing people like my husband. I do write books and love discussing life-giving topics. Talking about tools makes my mind blackout–unless those tools are instruments that can be used in the healing process and not to make a cabinet. I want to talk to […]

We have to keep recognizing we don’t know the best way to live our lives, to reach our goals, to plan for our futures. We can trust God will alter dreams that don’t line up with His will.

I pray that my faith-based fairytales lead to digging past shallow answers. My dreams for these stories go hand-in-hand with your dreams for discipleship.

How can we joyfully live the life God has given us when that means trudging through things like chronic pain and grief? – #writingcommunity #chronicillness

When New Year’s goals seem out of the realm of reality and joy a distant myth, can we find our way through the struggle together?

All of us are on a journey, but we’re not always sure where we are going. Are you wondering if you are alone in feeling lost or uncertain? If so, welcome my friend. You are not alone. I began writing to connect with others. I wanted a safe place to tell my stories of sorrow, […]
